30.3.14 Rats

The rats always march in time
climbing from the depths
where they mingle with the pests
indulge in screeching noise
and sexual rampages

Is that why we cringe in disgust when we see them?
Or does it have to do with this notion
that they are filth
below us crawling among the subway tracks

They live and die like us
Lead lives some say are as important as ours
We won’t remember the rats

Who march to work each day
Try to survive and feed
Look to mate and procreate
While always trying to be seen
Crawling among the subway tracks
